Proper cigar storage is critical. If not stored properly you may experience some of the following issues: uneven burn, horrible or bitter taste, mold, and tobacco beetle infestation.
You can help to prevent these problems by storing your cigars at 70°F and between 68-70% humidity. Cigars sealed in a plastic bag kept outside of a humidor may only last a couple of weeks.
Humidors must include a humidifying device or they are merely boxes. The humidity level inside you home also affect your humidor’s humidification.
What effects humidity levels?
Do not place your humidor near windows to avoid drafts and sunlight. Also avoid vents and fans as air conditioning and heating can affect the level of humidity in your home, making it harder to maintain the humidor’s correct level of humidity.
Not sure if the humidifying device is working?
To check if your humidor is working properly you can use a hygrometer. A hygrometer is an instrument used to measure the amount of humidity and water vapor in the atmosphere. If cigars get too dry, they become cracked and if they are too moist, they will begin to get mold.
All humidors come with humidification devices. A good humidor with a humidification device and is properly maintained will likely work for you without any issues. Be sure to use distilled water and/or humidifying solution in your humidification device.
You can add a DryMistat, a tube that tells you when to add water. The DryMistat is a plastic tube about the size of a cigar, which is filled with gelatin-like beads that absorb water. Drymistat releases water vapor when it’s needed. The crystals shrink as they give up water. That makes it easy to tell when it’s time to add water. … When they go below the ‘Add’ line simply fill with distilled water to the ‘Fill’ line.
There are many other humidifying devices on the market. If you need help in picking out the right humidor for your cigars, stop by Premium Cigars of Georgia. We’ll be more than happy to help with any questions you have.
